Microsoft has designed its digital personal assistant “Cortana” essentially for Windows 10 with every major update. Apart from finding your PC, it shows notifications, can send emails, set alarms, and do all of that using your tone. Some might seem it too disturbing though, and would like to turn the helper off.

While you could turn off Cortana with a single click in the days before the Anniversary Update, that’s no longer feasible. And with the latest Windows 10 Creators Update, blocking Cortana can completely break search, according to reports, with the only way to resolve it being a clean install.

If you’re still relying on plugging the plug on Cortana’s skills in Windows 10, there are methods to go about that. You can take away the tools it uses to learn about you, or you can totally switch it off.

Stop Cortana from knowing you

Initially, let’s head into Cortana’s settings to cut off all the different ways it monitors your device habits. Here’s how:

  • Tap on the search box or the Cortana symbol next to the Start key.
  • Open Cortana’s settings box with the gear icon.
  • In the settings bar, switch off every toggle from On to Off.
  • Now, scroll to the top of the settings panel, and tap on Change what Cortana knows about me in the cloud.
  • Microsoft will get a page from the Internet called Personal data in the same Start panel.
  • When it loads, scroll to the bottom, and click Clear.

To serve you better, Cortana gathers data about your talking and typing, as well. If you’d like to switch that off, follow these methods:

  • Click on the Start button.
  • Click the Settings gear icon.
  • Choose Privacy.
  • In the left panel, search for Speech, typing & inking.
  • Click Stop getting to know me.

Keep in mind, turning this off will also block dictation across Windows 10. If that’s a facility you rely on, then you’ll have to put up with Windows ‘getting to know you’.
