  1. Activation code / license key.

What is a license key or activation code?

Kaspersky activation code is a unique set of characters where there are 4 blocks of 5 characters, separated by a hyphen (-). Out of 4, each block contains 5 characters which may be a combination of alphabets and numeric values, which counts a total of 20 characters (XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX). To run the commercial version of Kaspersky Internet Security 2016, this activation code is required.

If you have already installed Kaspersky Internet Security 2016, but you don’t have an activation code to activate the application, then you need to purchase a commercial license to activate the application.

Retail box version

If you have purchased a boxed version of Kaspersky Anti-Virus 2016, the activation code will be printed on the activation card that comes in the box.

Downloadable version

Or if you have bought Kaspersky Anti-Virus 2016 via the eStore, you’ll receive the activation code via e-mail on your specified email address when placing the order.

The license key is meant for activating your Kaspersky application and also required to renew the license at a discount.

Once your selected product is activated with the help of the activation code, the license key displays in the Licensing window. It is important that you retain the activation code because your product can be retained with an activation code only.

  1. New activation code

For convenience, you are allowed to add a new activation code besides the active license.

When your subscription is about to expire, you need to renew a license for Kaspersky Anti-Virus 2016 and add a new activation code to the application as a reserved activation code to avoid any activation problem.

It’ll help you if your license expires because a new activation code will automatically activate your product without any disruption in your security protocol.

  1. How you can activate Kaspersky Anti-Virus 2016?

You may use either of the following methods to activate Kaspersky Anti-Virus 2016 one is commercial version and one is trial version:

  1. Trial version: The trial version is valid for 30 days and you can download and install it quite easily. Trial version is fully-functioning and you just need to connect to the Internet to activate the product. Once the trial license key expires, you will not be able to access its services because the database update will become unavailable.

The option of activating the trial version of the application may not be available if you have already installed the trial license on the same computer or if it is currently activated.

  1. Commercial version: To activate the commercial version, you need to enter a 20-digit activation code to activate the product. For installing and activating the product, you need to be connected to the Internet and then enter the activation code (pay attention, the letters “L”, “I”, “O” and the digit “0” are not used in activation codes).

Once the product is activated, the license number (activation code and license number both are different) is displayed in the Licensing window. It’s important to retain the activation code because it can be activated with an activation code.

  1. How to restore the activation code?

If your activation code is lost or deleted or expired prematurely, you may restore it using the following methods:

  1. Your activation code will be sent an e-mail message on your e-mail address. In case the message is deleted, contact the eStore in order to restore the activation code and provide the following information in your request:
  • Purchase date
  • Customer info (full name, email address)
  • Number of the online order (you can find it in a confirmation message received from the eStore after the purchase)
  1. If you own a retail version of the Kaspersky product, you need to send a request to Kaspersky Technical Support via the My Kaspersky service. Provide the following information while requesting for the Kaspersky services:
  • Date and approximate time when the license of your product was first time activated.
  • The license number.

Please note: you need to keep your license key with you because it is impossible to restore an activation code without a license key (number).

  • Screenshot of the Licensing window.
  • Copies of the documents that prove that you made a valid purchase (scans or photographs).
  1. Activation code validity period

If you have purchased the product but haven’t activated it, you can use unused activation code to activate your product any time, but remind that the license will begin to expire on the day of initial activation. Because the license validity period is calculated from the first activation (once an activation code is activated on any of the computers).

  1. What happens when the license expires?

When your product’s commercial license gets expire, Kaspersky Anti-Virus 2016 will stop updating antivirus databases. The application will continue to detect the infections and disinfect infected objects and filter spam, but it will do so as per the database downloaded on the last day of valid activation.

The database will stop working if you modify or manage it manually and try to install these to the product.

Moreover, you cannot prolong the license validity period by adding a trial activation code to the commercial version. Once a commercial activation code was installed, no trial activation code can be added to the product.

Trial license expiration

When a trial activation code expires (trial activation code is valid for one month) your system is no more protected against the viruses and other infections because the databases will not be updated according o the new virus definitions.

You are not allowed to run more than one product more trial activation codes simultaneously or in turn because it’s not possible to overlap or prolong the validity period of the first code.

So what you need to do after the license expires?

To restore the product functionality once the activation code expires, you need to add a new commercial activation code to the product but there is no need of reinstalling the application.

  1. How to know the license expiration date?
  • Open Kaspersky Anti-Virus 2016.
  • On the right side bottom part of the window, the remaining days left information is displayed, for instance, License: 290 days remaining.
  • Click License.

  • The Licensing window displays the information how many days are remaining to get the license expire.

  1. What happens to the active license if you replace it by a new one?

If you replace an active license for Kaspersky Anti-Virus 2016 with the new one if the existing has not expired yet, then the remaining days will be lost. But you can use those remaining days to secure another computer.

If you switch from one product to another, the remaining days of the license term will not be added to the term of the new license. You can add a new license as a reserved license if you don’t want to lose remaining days of your current license. Your reserved license will be activated automatically once your active license expires,.

  1. How to upgrade or reinstall the operating system without losing the license

Prior to reinstalling or updating the operating system, make sure that:

  • The activation code should be in print on the inner side of the box with the installer CD (in case you own a boxed version).
  • The activation code will not be formatted when reinstalling the operating system because the activation code is saved on another media (if you purchased the product via the eStore).
  • Product settings will be exported, and the configuration file will be saved on another disc (flash-drive, floppy) so they will not be formatted while reinstalling the operating system.

It’s recommended to perform the following actions after the OS reinstallation:

  • Go to the Kaspersky Lab website and download the installer.
  • Activate and Install Kaspersky Anti-Virus 2016.
  • Once you installed the product and restarted the system, import the product settings from the configuration file that you have created earlier.

N case you portioned our hard drive into several partitions with different operating systems installed, you may use one activation code to activate multiple copies of a Kaspersky Lab product on the operating systems which ever are installed on the same computer.

  1. Can you activate the product by a product code purchased in a different country?

You are not allowed to do so because the activation code is region specific and it’s not valid outside its territory. If you try to do so activation error 4:1 may appear.

To eliminate this issue, install and activate your Kaspersky Lab product in the region (country) where you purchased it.

  1. Limit of activations

With the help of the single product key, you can secure a certain number of computers. For instance, with the help of a valid Kaspersky Anti-Virus 2016 license, you can protect your two computers, but you’re not allowed to use the same license for three or more computers.

But in case if the number of computers that you have secured is less than the limit offered by the product, then you are allowed to increase the number of covered computers with the help of a retail partner or via the Kaspersky Lab eStore.
